Movies like "Schindler's List" and "Varian's War"
recount stories of courageous people that saved jewish lives from the
concentration camps. George Mantello (Mandl), who worked at El Salvador's
consulate was such a man, like Schindler and Varian, as recounted by the book
"The Man who stopped the trains to Auschwitz: George Mantello, El Salvador, and
Switzerland's Finest Hour". This was the greatest single rescue effort during
the Holocoust, resulting in the saving of 14,000 peoples lives who were given
salvadorean citizenship papers. George Mantello convinced our General Consul,
Colonel Jose Arturo Castellanos to give these life saving citizenship papers.
The book, writen by David Kranzler and with a preface by Senator Joseph
Lieberman was the winner of the 1998 Egit Prize (Histadrut) for the Best
Manuscript on the Holocaust.
