2004-04-08 - Car Design - Michelin Challenge

The 2005 Michelin Challenge is a Design Contest with the theme:
German Design and its influence...

This is a very conservative entry, and it would be a modern interpretation
for the German marque Trabant (which was the car made in Easter Germany
when the country was still divided during the Cold War).
The design, more than a show car, is an almost production ready design.

The front evoques the elements of the original Trabant design (at least as I remember them),
and there are many influences of traditional and modern German designs:

The proportions, with the short front overhang, and high rear deck are from the BMW 320 series,
for a good weight distribution. The motor is behind the front axle.

The greenhouse (roof) is an arch, as used by many designs
from the VW - Audi group and Porsche past and present,
and it imparts an image of strength and aerodynamic efficiency.

The front end features a simple grille, like the original Trabant.
Its form, a rounded trapezoidal shape, can be seen in many Mercedes Benz designs.
Also, the vertical headlights evoke the Mercedes designs from the sixties.
The rear directional lights are "ribbed", like the Mercedes from the seventies and eighties,
to keep the light surfaces clean.

The big wheel arch at the front, which follows the arch of the front end silouette,
evoques a bit the Ford Focus, which has exagerated wheel arches.

The whole design is relativelly uncluttered, clean and functional, with well delineated lines
as would be a Bauhaus and European inspired design...
